The Stafford

Green Park, London

Main House Classic King room

Georgian grandeur at a historic five-star institution in the heart of London’s St James’s, with optional breakfast and a bottle of wine

With enough royal references to keep history lovers happy, this classically English gem set in its own mews just off St James’s Street is undeniably five-star worthy. A one-time residence of Lord Lyttelton and his wife Lady Sarah (a descendant of the aristocratic Spencer family), it comes with a network of now-sealed underground tunnels that run to Buckingham Palace, as well as spectacular 380-year-old wine cellars that house around 8,000 bottles.

A firm favourite with Princes William and Harry and their showbiz besties, the Beckhams, this high-end hotel – made up of three 17th-century townhouses that surround a charming courtyard – has been operating since 1912. Nowadays, there’s 105 unique rooms offering different decor themes – the most characterful of which is the Main House for its lashings of Victorian flourishes, rich fabrics, bespoke furnishings, marble bathrooms, and all-out elegance.

But it’s the dining options that give this place its superstar edge, especially the elegant ambience of The Game Bird, that comes up trumps for classic British dishes and fine wines. Equally glam is the American Bar – a truly unique and atmospheric spot that’s a must-see for its kitsch collection of baseball caps, quirky knick-knacks, World War II memorabilia, signed photographs from famous guests, and model aircraft dangling from the ceiling.
