A former earl's manor house and coaching inn with Grade II-listed status and cosy up-to-date decor in Welshpool – includes breakfast

Enjoy a visit to The Royal Oak and you’ll be following in the footsteps of Her Majesty the Queen herself, who enjoyed a spot of lunch here when she visited Welshpool in 2010. As the former manor house of the Earl of Powis, before the hotel became an important coaching inn in 1927, she’s not the only VIP to have passed through these historic doors. Join the impressive roster and you’ll find a Grade II-listed design that dates back to the 18th century, plus plenty of modern charm.

As you’d expect of a former coaching inn, the hotel sits on the town’s main route and provides easy access to the Severn Valley and beyond. It also takes its hospitality seriously, serving up locally sourced ingredients and hand-pulled beers and ales by a working fireplace. A patisserie cabinet that’s filled daily with freshly baked goods and guestrooms offering Sky TV and Wi-Fi are some of the contemporary updates here too. The Royal Oak trumpets a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

Good to know

Due to the building’s listed status, the hotel does not have a lift. Many rooms also require stair access.

Accommodation

The Royal Oak's 25 guestrooms credit their individual designs and historic features to the building’s listed nature. Beneath the original beams, you can expect to find the traditional character updated with modern amenities like Sky TV and Wi-Fi in a perfect marriage of old and new.

Amenities:

- En-suite bathroom
- Satellite TV
- Tea and coffee facilities
- Iron and ironing board
- Wi-Fi

Dining

The Royal Oak lives up to its traditional Georgian coaching inn roots by offering a menu of locally sourced ingredients and hand-pulled beers and ales in a cosy environment. Thanks to a refurbishment, guests can escape the colder months by its working fireplace, or celebrate a special occasion with friends around the 14-seater private dining oak table. In addition to
regional dishes, there's also a patisserie cabinet filled daily with pastries, muffins and scones.

Location

As you’d expect from a former coaching inn, The Royal Oak sits on the main route into Welshpool. Known as the Gateway to Wales, Welshpool is ideally located for guests wanting to visit local attractions like Offa’s Dyke, the Severn Valley and historic Powis Castle, alongside being under an hour’s drive from Snowdonia National Park. Across the border, you’ll find Shrewsbury just 17 miles away and Birmingham also within an hour’s drive.
