A rustic home from home in a traditional East Sussex village setting, including breakfast and the choice between a room or a spacious and romantic wooden lodge

This is how you do rustic-chic. Situated in a charming village in the heart of rural East Sussex, The Bell in Ticehurst is an old coaching inn reborn as an utterly original hotel and restaurant. Rather than streamlining one particular school of design, the concept here is delightfully eclectic; a muddle of country game fair, vintage Victoriana and modern dandy. In fact, The Bell has scooped up much praise from Condé Nast Traveller, The Times, Tatler and more, as well as a Best Gastropub title at Aquisition International Magazine's Global Excellence Awards 2017, and a Four Star Inn accreditation from VisitEngland.

The bedrooms and lodges are individually styled, some with freestanding copper tubs, some with exposed brick walls; all with authentically scuffed hardwood floors. Comfort is paramount, with handmade Somnus mattresses and luxury bedding, as well as chic en-suite bathrooms that you may well be tempted to sleep in. Not just an interesting place to crash, The Bell in Ticehurst serves fine ales and features an acclaimed English restaurant (The Independent have in fact paid homage to its patriotic menu, and the National Pub & Bar Awards named it South East Pub of the Year 2017).

The rooms and lodges are a cacophony of antique and rustic-chic delights, with hardwood floors and hardback books. Silver birch trees in some of the Classic Double rooms also create a slightly Alice in Wonderland vibe. Country check, exposed brick, chessboard tiles and original features are thrown into the mix with elements of the bizarre for a stay you're unlikely to forget.

The Lodges are set in their own gardens and are more spacious than the hotel rooms, with the additional benefit of access to a cosy firepit. Each wooden Lodge is individually designed and freestanding for extra privacy.

The dining at The Bell in Ticehurst has received high praise from publications like The Independent and National Geographic Traveller. The emphasis is on hearty country fare, including just-dug vegetables from the local farm, with a focus on seasonality and fresh ingredients. There's also a bar serving proper ales and well-chosen wines. All of this is, of course, set to a backdrop of neon signage, wood panelling and other rustic details.

The hotel is located in the village of Ticehurst, surrounded by East Sussex countryside. Bateman's, the 17th-century home of Rudyard Kipling, is around 15 minutes away, as is Bewl Water, where you can go fly-fishing or have a go at various watersports. Nearby Tunbridge Wells is a pretty town for shopping and Rye and Hastings are both hot-spot for picking up antiques.

How do I get there?

The hotel is around a 90-minute drive from London via the A21 (parking is available on-site). You could also take the train from London Charing Cross to Wadhurst, which takes just over an hour, from there it's a 10-minute taxi transfer from Ticehurst.

Please be aware that your taxi must be booked in advance, as Wadhurst station is set just outside a tiny village and there is no taxi rank. Contact the hotel in advance to get information on booking a cab (cost is roughly £12 for a one-way journey). You can also take a bus from directly outside the station to Ticehurst, which takes 10-15 minutes and costs around £3 one-way, but the buses only run a couple of times an hour during the week and every couple of hours on a Sunday, so please check the times in advance and ensure you have cash, as there's no cash machine at the station.
