A tour of Sri Lanka's best-known sights and exotic scenery, with a Yala National Park safari and all-inclusive beach escape - travel and excursions included

Cast adrift from mainland India, the tear drop-shaped island of Sri Lanka is a kaleidoscopic destination boasting emerald-green rainforests, sugary sands and ancient monuments aplenty. Spend time hopping between its best bits on this tour, taking in exotic scenery and wildlife and the serene coastline, with a handful of eye-opening excursions and World Heritage Sites along the way.

The first stop on your Sri Lankan adventure is Negombo on the west coast, where you’ll get to visit a rehabilitation facility for orphaned elephants and marvel at these wonderful creatures as they familiarise themselves with their stunning natural habitat. From your second hotel in Dambulla, you’ll discover the wonders of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, with its terraced gardens, world-renowned frescoes and mirror wall, and visit the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Polonnaruwa and Dambulla Cave Temple - a labyrinthine complex of five caves covered in colourful rock paintings.

After visiting a spice garden, you'll arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage City of Kandy in central Sri Lanka, famed for its sacred Buddhist sites. Strike out on foot to explore this beautiful city, perched on a mountain-rimmed plateau, before discovering Habarana.

Following a one-night stay in Kandy, it’s time for panoramic views of rolling tea plantations during your overnighter in Nuwara Eliya, known by locals as 'Little England' given its countryside village vibe. You'll then discover the seven stately statues of Buduruwagala Temple en route to Yala, where you'll stay for one night overlooking the tranquil Yoda Lake. An evening Jeep safari will take you into the depths of Yala National Park, a 130,000-hectare protected area dotted with ancient temples that’s rich in wildlife (44 different mammals), including the world's biggest concentration of leopards.

After a stop-off in Weligama to watch traditional stilt fisherman in action, you'll head to the Sri Lankan coast of Waskaduwa for four nights of all-inclusive chill-out bliss. Overlooking a mass of sparkling Indian Ocean, the beachfront Citrus Waskaduwa is the essence of sun-soaked tranquillity, with breathtaking views and delicious cuisine – a supremely relaxing end to your Sri Lankan adventure.
