Explore magnificent Moscow and enchanting St Petersburg with this city-hop escape, including breakfast, excursions, inter-city train transfers and flights

Experience two of Russia's most exciting cities on this culture-rich break, split between the illuminating charms of the capital, Moscow, and the majestic wonders of the port town of St Petersburg, complete with two quirky hotel stays worth writing home about.

Arrive in the capital for a sojourn at Novotel Moscow Centre, which welcomes guests with a modern glass exterior, contrasting to the historic surrounding streets. On a sightseeing tour, take in the Red Square, St Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin grounds and Armoury Museum (with its divine Fabergé egg collection), before embarking on a walking tour of Moscow most iconic street – Arbat Street. Stroll the cobblestones and browse the charming stalls while soaking up the rich history.

You’ll then hop onto a high-speed Sapsan train to St Petersburg, where you'll bed down at Radisson Sonya Hotel – a quirky bohemian find not far from the Summer Garden. This emblematic city is packed with architectural and historical attractions. Marvel at majestic squares, the Winter Palace (former Tsars residence) and the Marble Palace, before admiring the Peter and Paul Fortress, taking in St Petersburg’s main boulevard – Nevsky Prospect – and visiting the imposing St Isaac's Cathedral, with its sculptured facade and dazzling interiors. You’ll also visit the city’s most praiseworthy attraction – the sprawling Hermitage Museum, and second largest in the world.

Day 1: Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2: Embark on an excursion to Gorki Leninskie, including lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll head out on a three-hour sightseeing city tour with photo stops.
Day 3: Discover Moscow’s Red Square, Kremlin grounds and the Kremlin Armoury Museum on a tour, before a Metro visit and walking tour of Arbat Street in the afternoon.
Day 4: Today, you’ll visit the Tretiakov Gallery. Then catch a train to St Petersburg and transfer to your hotel.
Day 5: Head out on a sightseeing city tour with photo stops, with an afternoon visit to Peter and Paul Fortress, the Pantheon of the Tsars and Hermitage Museum.
Day 6: You’ll enjoy a second visit to Hermitage Museum, before spending the rest of the day to explore at your leisure.
Day 7: Today, you’ll head out of town to Pushkin, where you’ll discover Catherine Palace.
Day 8: Head to the airport to catch your flight back to the UK.

Novotel Moscow Centre (three nights)

Located in the heart of Moscow, just a 15-minute drive from the city’s Red Square and the Kremlin, Novotel Moscow Centre offers a modern base for exploring the magnificent capital. You can expect a contemporary design throughout the hotel, with spacious guestrooms providing all the modern comforts you could need. There’s plenty to keep your appetite satiated too; the elegant restaurant, Cote Azure, serves up a selection of Mediterranean, regional and international cuisine, while the laid-back City Bar offers a variety of drinks and light snacks. For those keen to keep up their workouts while away, there’s a fitness centre with exercise bikes and a treadmill. There are two Metro stations within easy reach of the hotel.

Radisson Sonya Hotel, St Petersburg (four nights)

Sitting just on the edge of the Old Town with views of the newer part of the city, this bohemian design hotel features a classically elegant facade and is themed around Dostoevsky’s Crime & Punishment. Expect characterful, atmospheric interiors, with paintings and artworks referencing this world-famous novel. The lobby reception desk appears suspended in air, supported by a row of upturned Russian dolls. The quirky Metamorfos restaurant also follows a literary theme. Standard rooms are fun and funky, decorated with details of Raphael’s Sistine Madonna painting. Amenities include a flatscreen TV, minibar and tea and coffee facilities. There's also an in-house gym and steam rooms available for pure relaxation. The nearest Metro station is about 10 minutes’ walk, and the Summer Garden about 15 minutes.
