An award-winning five-star hotel set among beautiful grounds in Durham, with golf, fine dining and a luxe spa - includes breakfast, spa access and more

Rockliffe Hall is the north of England's only AA-rated five-red-star resort and is repeatedly named one of the best luxury hotels in the UK in the TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Awards and in the Sunday Times top 100 hotels. High praise indeed, but when you consider that this Darlington country hotel is set in an 18th-century estate in County Durham with an award-winning spa, three gourmet restaurants, a championship 18-hole golf course and beautiful gardens, it's hardly a surprise.

Aside from picturesque walks in the surrounding countryside, there are plenty of other facilities to tempt you. Newly refreshed and sporting four AA Rosettes (one of only two golf and spa resorts in the country boasting this accolade), The Orangery offers a unique culinary journey through superb tasting menus, all the while maintaining its 18th-century Old Hall charm. You can also indulge in afternoon tea, evening drinks and superb tipples from the refined cocktail bar here.

On top of that, the 50,000-square-foot spa has its own 20-metre indoor swimming pool, one of the largest hydrotherapy pools in the country, an outdoor pool, a spa garden, a state-of-the-art fitness centre and more. It even sports a five-bubble luxury rating
and an award for Best Spa For Luxury UK 2016 by the Good Spa Guide. Speaking of awards, the hotel is also part of the
Sunday Times Ultimate 100 British Hotels and the Daily Mail's Top 10 Hotels in the UK. Hardly surprising, Rockliffe Hall garnered a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

Good to know

Please note that The Orangery is open Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday) from 6.30-9.30pm.

New Hall Superior rooms are south-facing and have views over the gardens and golf course, as well as a marble en-suite with walk-in monsoon shower.

If you're travelling with a furry friend in tow, the Tiplady Lodges are the only rooms in the hotel which allow dogs. With either Juliet balconies or patios, views over the grounds, and warm furnishings in plush velvets, these are the cosiest rooms of the bunch.

Foodies will go crazy for the glamorous set of gourmet dining options on offer. One of only two golf and spa resort restaurants in the country to have been awarded four AA Rosettes, The Orangery is a high-end establishment, where acclaimed chef Richard Allen delights with varied cuisine and locally sourced produce from the North East and Rockliffe Hall's own grounds. The lively Brasserie dishes up bistro fare throughout the day and the informal Clubhouse serves up a range of quality British classics. For afternoon tea, head to the atmospheric Old Hall and, for evening drinks, the Cocktail Bar is ideal. There's also a wine cellar, where a vast range displays the property's passion for great wines.

Please note that The Orangery is open Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday). Please also note that guests opting for the dinner offer will enjoy a three-course dinner in the Brasserie.

Voting the hotel spa as one of the best in the UK, Good Spa Guide says "Rockliffe Hall very much deserves our full five-bubble accolade. It has the wow factor and is a perfect destination spa." As if this weren't enough, it also won a Good Spa Guide Award for Sheer Luxury, placing it firmly on the spa world's map.

Get waited on hand and foot by spa butlers who'll bring you chilled champagne before booking yourself in for a facial, wrap or massage. Or, simply relax in the 20-metre pool, Sleep Retreat, Roman sauna or hydropool. There's also a state-of-the-art Technogym with work-out classes.

Adjacent to the current spa, the Spa Garden offers an even more enriching spa experience with its two outdoor pools, including an infinity edge hydrotherapy pool with massage. It also features a Jacuzzi, garden room with glass-fronted sauna, fire pit, and landscaped gardens with views across Rockliffe Hall’s grounds.

Rockliffe Hall has recently expanded its spacious spa facilities to include the Spa Garden room complete with outdoor hydrotherapy pool, glass fronted sauna, heated ceramic loungers and relaxing day beds so you can relax and enjoy unspoilt views over the 375 acre estate.

Designed by award-winning course architect, Marc Westenborg, Rockliffe Hall’s 18-hole golf course is reputed to be one of the finest golfing challenges in the UK. It has hosted a major tournament and is played by some golf greats in the European Tour English Senior Open. The five individually designed tee positions cater for players of all abilities.

Country walks are on the cards here as you're situated in pretty County Durham between the sleepy villages of Hurworth and Croft on Tees. The grounds themselves are perfect for fishing and of course golf, but if you want to venture further afield, you could take a trip to nearby York, Newcastle, or visit Whitby, the home of Dracula and Captain James Cook. You're also just a short drive from the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so if you wanted to get serious about walking, there's every chance.
