Discover India's quiet side with a mesmerising trip through beautiful Kerala - includes tours, a houseboat stay and all travel

If you've ever thought of visiting India, Kerala is a great place to start. This tranquil area, nestled between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, is known for its easy pace and laid-back vibe. Meander by boat through the region's extensive backwaters and simply laze on one of Kerala's beautiful beaches - this trip incorporates the region’s many aspects.

You’ll kick off with two nights at Fragrant Nature Kochi, in Cochin. This five-star boutique palatial pad sings with zesty yellow and marine blue right by the water in the ancient port of Cochin. Here, you're staying in what was once the East India Company's office, so you're already immersed in key harbour history before even stepping out of your grand waterside digs. After a walking tour of Mattancherry and a fun tuk-tuk ride on your first day, you'll be treated to a half-day sightseeing tour of Cochin the next.

Followed by an evening spent at a classical Indian dance show, you'll move onto Munnar - a verdant expanse nestled among the Kannan Devan Hills. Your hotel here is set on a hillside amidst the lush greenery and misty mountains, on 66 acres of verdant forest land. While here, you'll visit the Tata Tea Museum to learn about the area's agricultural staple, before moving onto Thekkady.

Thekkady's forest of Periyar is well known for its wildlife and, while here, you'll get to experience it in all its glory. Amongst the evergreen forests and lush grasslands you'll find elephants, Sambar deer and tigers. During your time here, you'll take a guided walk through a spice plantation and visit the residents of an elephant sanctuary, where you’ll get the chance to feed, and bathe these gentle giants.

Next, you'll take to the waters and spend a night on Kerala's backwaters in a houseboat that's been re-purposed from a traditional kettuvallam (rice boat). Cruise through the narrow canals to discover lush paddy fields, typical villages and hidden islets before heading on to Kumarakom for your final two nights. At your hotel here, you can treat yourself to an Ayurvedic massage and tuck into Keralan cuisine before catching your flight home.
