A five- or seven-night city-to-Sahara Morocco break with a night in a desert camp - including breakfast, flights, transfers and optional desert quad biking

Discover the diverse landscapes of mesmerising Morocco with this city to sands escape that takes in village life along the way. Starting with a night in Marrakech, you’ll take a superbly scenic drive into the Atlas Mountains to reach your next destination, visiting in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou en route, and stopping at the Cinema Museum in Ouarzazate to discover which blockbusters have used this photogenic setting as their backdrop.

Then, you’ll spend a night in Dades - a gorge-carved landscape that offers some simply spectacular scenery, where a glimpse of local life sees men herding camels and goats. It’s then onwards to the Sahara Desert, tackling the sand-swept dunes in a fully equipped 4x4 vehicle. Upon arrival, you’ll spend the night in Riad Madu’s tented camp, under the impressive canopy of stars that only the desert’s vast darkness can reveal.

The next day, you’ll travel to Riad Madu’s main building, to spend a day at leisure. Why not explore the dunes by quad bike, or simply relax by the outdoor pool amidst the riad’s tranquil setting. Then, you’ll head back to Marrakech for another night (or another three nights, if you choose the seven-night option) at Riad Aliya, before heading home.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech and check-in to Riad Aliya.
Day 2: Take a scenic drive through the mountains, stopping for lunch at the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou - a traditional Mud Brick city on the edge of the High Atlas Mountains. Later in the day, visit the Ouarzazate Cinema Museum, before checking in to Hotel Xaluca Dades, where you’ll spend the night. (B)
Day 3: Take a drive through the gorges of Dades before a guided tour of Todgha gorges. After lunch, continue to Merzouga, where you’ll take a break (and can enjoy a swim in the pool) at Riad Nasser Palace. Riad Aliya, Marrakech (one night, then one night or three nights)

You’ll find Riad Aliya’s combination of regal rooms, inner courtyard and pool a peaceful retreat from Marrakech’s medina and chaotic bazaars. Located in the heart of the old town, Riad Aliya’s restaurant offers all the spices and flavours of the nearby souks in its authentic Berber cuisine, tagines and Moroccan salads. International dishes are also served beneath the Moorish pillars here. When you’re not retiring to your Essaouira or Sahara-inspired guestroom, you can navigate the surrounding alleyways to the Djemaa el Fna and Saadian Tombs, too.

Hotel Xaluca Dades (one night)

This beautiful four-star hotel is set in the Atlas Mountains. With a burnt-orange exterior gleaming beneath the sun, a palm-fringed outdoor pool with Jacuzzi and plump white sun loungers, you have the perfect setting to drink in the silent grandeur of the surrounding mountains.

Indoors you'll find Wi-Fi, an indulgent hammam, a sprawling wood-decked restaurant, a panoramic-windowed lounge and rooms decorated in exquisite African designs. There's also a tennis court and heliport, so you're set for a happy life here really. Hotel Xaluca Dades is a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Winner in the category of Top 25 Hotes in Morocco.

Riad Madu, Hassilabied (two nights)

This scenically set riad sits at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and houses just 12 traditionally decorated guest rooms and suites. There’s a cosy communal living room, with an atmospheric fire place, and a terrace that affords glorious views over the surrounding sands. There’s also an outdoor pool, and a lovely lantern-lit restaurant.

You’ll spend your first night here at the hotel’s tented camp (bivouac), which is comprised of eight Berber tents, with en-suite bathrooms and hot water. There’s also a communal tent which houses a restaurant and a lounge corner, strewn with Moroccan carpet. You’ll spend your second night back at the hotel building, in a Standard room.
