Stylish stay at fairytale-like château in the wine paradise of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in France’s Rhône Valley - with breakfast, wine tastings and more

There’s a stately vibe at this four-star château located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape - the stunning Rhône Valley village between the towns of Orange and Avignon that’s famous for its full-bodied red wines made mostly from the southern Rhône grape trio (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre). Built in the late 19th century, Château des Fines Roches has an illustrious history; not least as the former home to renegade aristocrat Folco de Baroncelli (otherwise known as the Marquis de Baroncelli).

While the fairytale-like exterior wows with stroll-worthy manicured lawns and a fabulous outdoor terrace for summertime wining and dining, the understated interiors are the most inspiring. All of the 11 guest rooms are uniquely-styled, with each assuring Provençal décor and very tasteful soft furnishings. You can also expect four-poster beds dressed with luxe linens, private bathrooms with bathtubs or showers, flatscreen TVs, and sublime views across the grounds.

Days here can be spent vineyard-hopping (there’s around 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers), exploring the countryside by bike, and visiting nearby Avignon for its UNESCO-listed historic city centre and magnificent Palais des Papes. Post-sightseeing, head back to this charming place to dine at La Table des Fines Roches - the hotel’s signature restaurant where ingredient-driven gourmet French fare is (unsurprisingly) paired with some truly incredible wines.

Good to know

Please note there is a local tax of €1.10 (per person, per night) to be paid directly to the hotel.

Expect lashings of Provençal charm in the 11 individually-designed guest rooms, all of which come with tiled or wooden flooring, rich drapes, tasteful soft furnishings, and views of Palais des Papes, the outdoor pool, the Luberon, or Mont Ventoux. The Charm rooms (Mireille, Estelle, or Manon) come with a four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom with bathtub or shower, flatscreen TV with digital channels, and minibar. The larger Privlege rooms (Baroncelli, Magali, or Annabelle) offer features such as large fireplaces and sofa beds. Deluxe rooms (Fanny, Mistral, and Victoria) have similar room amenities but also feature a Nespresso machine.

Given that food and wine is the château’s raison d'être, the gourmet menu by esteemed chef Nicholas Jay does not disappoint. Open daily from 12pm to 2pm (lunch) and from 7pm to 9pm (dinner), signature dining spot La Table des Fines Roches delights with sophisticated and seasonal à la carte dishes created with locally-sourced ingredients. There’s also an expert sommelier on hand to help with proper wine pairings (the château’s cellar houses around 800 bottles from more than 50 Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards - and beyond).

You’ll be staying in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the prestigious and profoundly historic wine-growing village in France's southern Rhône Valley. Aside from vineyard-hopping (there’s around 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers), must-dos include renting a bike to explore the stunning countryside, visiting the village itself for its pretty medieval lanes and ruined castle, and hitting the nine-mile-long walking trail that leads you to the River Rhone. You’ll also be just seven miles from Avignon where not-to-be-missed sights include the historic city centre, Popes' Palace (Palais des Papes), and Saint Bénézet Bridge (also known as the Pont d'Avignon) - all of which are listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Château des Fines Roches is a 50-minute drive from Marseille Provence Airport.
